The l-carnitine is a body's own substance, which is generated out of the amino acids methionine and lysine in the liver, testicals and kidneys. The organism has l-carnitine reserves of 20-25g, which is supplemented through the daily consumption of meat (mutton, beef), milk and wheat products. The l-carnitine is an essential substance for the energy metabolism and is needed primarily for the transport of long chain fatty acids through the inner mitochondria membrane. If sufficient l-carnitine is available, it stimulates the anaerobe and the aerobe energy metabolism, because an increased amount of free coenzyme is released due to the reaction with acetyl-coenzyme. The stimulation of the energy throughput makes l-carnitine interesting for the competitive athlete.
